How to Tell If Your Garage Door Needs Repairing

How to Tell If Your Garage Door Needs Repairing

Your garage door works hard every single day. Over time, even the best-quality doors can develop faults — and catching a problem early almost always means a cheaper, quicker fix. Here are the most common warning signs that your garage door needs professional attention, and what you should do if you spot them.

It’s Making Unusual Noises

A well-maintained garage door should open and close smoothly and quietly. If yours has started grinding, scraping, squeaking or banging, something isn’t right. Grinding noises often point to worn rollers or a lack of lubrication on the tracks. Squeaking can indicate that the hinges or springs need attention. Banging sounds when the door reaches the top or bottom of its travel can suggest a problem with the tension or the end stops. None of these noises should be ignored — left untreated, they tend to get worse and can eventually lead to a complete failure.

It’s Moving Unevenly or Slowly

If your garage door shudders, jolts or moves unevenly as it opens and closes, the cause is usually a problem with the tracks, rollers or springs. Uneven movement puts extra stress on the motor and the door panels themselves, which can cause secondary damage if the issue isn’t resolved quickly. Similarly, if an electric door seems to be struggling — taking longer than usual to open, or stopping partway — the motor may be working harder than it should to compensate for a mechanical fault elsewhere.

The Springs Look Worn or Damaged

Garage door springs carry an enormous amount of tension and are one of the most safety-critical components of the whole system. If you can see visible signs of wear — rust, gaps in the coils, or a spring that appears stretched or misshapen — do not attempt to adjust or replace it yourself. Broken garage door springs can be extremely dangerous and should always be handled by a trained engineer. If your door suddenly becomes very heavy to lift manually, a broken spring is almost certainly the cause.

The Door Isn’t Sitting Level

Stand back and look at your garage door when it’s fully closed. Does it sit evenly in the frame, or is one side slightly higher or lower than the other? An uneven door is often a sign that one of the cables has snapped or slipped, or that the springs are unevenly tensioned. As well as looking unsightly, an uneven door creates gaps around the edges that let in draughts, water and pests — and it will only get worse over time.

The Automatic Opener Isn’t Working Properly

If your garage door is automated, keep an eye on how the opener is performing. Common signs of trouble include the door reversing before it reaches the ground, the motor running but the door not moving, the remote control becoming unreliable, or the door opening and closing on its own without any input. Some of these issues have simple fixes — a dead remote battery, for example — but others can point to sensor faults, limit switch problems or motor failure that needs professional diagnosis.
