Garage Door Cables Snapped? What Causes It and How We Fix It
Snapped cables are one of the more common garage door repair jobs we carry out across Chesterfield, Derbyshire and Sheffield. The cables are a critical part of how most garage doors operate — they transmit the force from the springs to the door, keeping it balanced and allowing it to open and close smoothly. When they snap, the door often drops unevenly, jams, or becomes impossible to open.
What Causes Garage Door Cables to Snap?
The most common cause is simply age and wear. Cables are under constant tension and flexed every time the door operates. Over time, the individual wires within the cable begin to fray, and eventually the cable breaks. Corrosion accelerates this process — if moisture gets into the cable, it rusts from the inside out, often with no visible warning until it snaps.
Cables can also snap suddenly if the door hits an obstruction when closing, creating a shock load the cable isn’t designed to absorb. A broken spring can also cause cable failure, since the unbalanced load puts enormous stress on the cables.
What Happens When a Cable Snaps?
Typically, one side of the door drops lower than the other, causing the door to bind in the tracks or jam partway open. In some cases the door drops completely. Either way, the door should be left in position and not operated until the cables are replaced — forcing it can cause further damage to the tracks, springs and bottom section.
Can You Replace Just One Cable?
Technically yes, but we always recommend replacing both at the same time. If one cable has failed from age, the other is equally worn and likely to go soon after. Replacing both in one visit saves a second call-out charge and avoids the disruption of a repeat failure.
