Garage Door Stuck? Common Causes and How to Get It Moving Again

A garage door that won’t move is one of the most frustrating problems a homeowner can face — particularly if your car is inside. Before calling an engineer, there are a few things worth checking yourself, and some important things not to do.

Common Causes of a Stuck Garage Door

Broken spring or cable — if a spring or cable has failed, the door will feel very heavy and may have dropped unevenly. This is the most common cause of a door that suddenly stops working. Do not try to force it open.

Power failure (electric doors) — before assuming a mechanical problem, check that the motor unit is powered. A tripped circuit breaker is a surprisingly common culprit. Most electric garage door motors have an emergency release cord that allows you to disengage the motor and operate the door manually.

Remote control or keypad fault — try the wall-mounted button inside the garage rather than the remote. If that works, the issue is the remote: try new batteries first.

Obstruction in the tracks — even a small piece of debris lodged in the track can prevent a sectional or roller door from moving. Check both tracks for anything obvious and clear it if safe to do so.

Frozen door seal — in cold weather, the rubber seal at the bottom of the door can freeze to the ground. Gentle pressure — not forcing — and some de-icer around the seal usually resolves this.

Motor limit or sensitivity settings — if the door starts to move but stops partway, the motor’s sensitivity or limit settings may need adjusting. This is an engineer job.

When to Call Us

If you’ve checked the obvious causes and the door still won’t move — or if you suspect a broken spring or cable — call us rather than trying to force it. Forcing a door with a broken spring can bend the tracks or damage the bottom section, turning a straightforward repair into a more expensive one.
