Which Type of Garage Door Is Right for Your Home?

Choosing a new garage door is a bigger decision than most people expect. With several different types to choose from — each with their own advantages, space requirements and price points — it’s easy to feel overwhelmed before you’ve even started thinking about colour or finish. This guide breaks down the five main types of garage door so you can go into the buying process feeling confident.

Roller Doors

Roller doors are one of the most popular choices for modern homes, and it’s easy to see why. They open by rolling up into a compact barrel housing mounted just above the opening, which means they take up virtually no space inside or outside the garage. This makes them ideal for properties where the driveway is short and you need to park close to the door, or where the ceiling inside the garage is low. Most roller doors are also available with electric automation as standard, and they tend to offer excellent insulation and security. The main trade-off is that they’re generally more expensive than a basic up and over door, and if the mechanism develops a fault it can be more complex to repair.

Sectional Doors

Sectional doors are made up of horizontal panels that hinge together and rise vertically before travelling back along the ceiling of the garage. Like roller doors, they don’t swing out when opening, which makes them a great option for tight driveways. Because the panels run along the ceiling when open, the full width and height of the garage opening remains completely clear. Sectional doors are typically very well insulated, making them a popular choice for people who use their garage as a workshop, gym or utility room as well as for parking. They’re available in a wide range of designs and finishes, and can be fitted with automation easily.

Up and Over Doors

Up and over doors are the most traditional garage door type and remain a very popular choice, particularly for older properties. They operate on a simple mechanism — the door panel swings outward as it rises and then slides back horizontally into the garage on a tracked frame. They’re reliable, cost-effective and available in a huge variety of styles, from plain steel panels to timber-effect designs. The main limitation is that the door swings out as it opens, so you need a reasonable amount of clear space in front of the garage. If your driveway is very short, a roller or sectional door may be a more practical option.

Side Hinged Doors

Side hinged garage doors open outward from the centre, like a large pair of doors. They’re an excellent choice if you primarily use your garage for storage or as a workspace rather than for parking, as the full opening is instantly accessible without any need for a mechanism or remote control. They’re also the most straightforward type of door to operate manually, which can be an advantage if you frequently carry items in and out. Side hinged doors are available in timber, steel and GRP, and can be fitted with an automation kit if required. They’re not the most space-efficient option for a narrow driveway, but for the right property they’re hard to beat.

Sliding Doors

Sliding garage doors track horizontally along the front of the garage, parallel to the wall, rather than opening inward or outward. This means the ceiling stays completely clear and there’s no swing space required in front of the door. They’re a less common choice for residential properties but can be ideal for garages with low ceilings, awkward openings or where the aesthetic of a sliding door suits the style of the home.

What About Automation?

All five door types can be fitted with electric automation, allowing you to open and close your garage door from inside your car or via a smartphone app. If you’re already replacing or installing a new door, it’s almost always worth considering automation at the same time — retrofitting a motor later is possible but more expensive than including it from the outset.
